Veeam FastSCP for Microsoft Azure

Veeam FastSCP for Microsoft Azure

Veeam does some great products for your virtualization and datacenter environment such as their Veeam Backup & Replication suite, Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE and Management Packs for System Center Operations Manager. Now a couple of weeks ago Veeam released a cool free tool call Veeam FastSCP fro Microsoft Azure. With Veeam FastSCP (Secure Copy Protocol) for Microsoft Azure, IT Pros and Azure Developers can simply and reliably copy local files to Azure VMs, and copy files in Azure VMs to on-premises.

Veeam FastSCP for Microsoft Azure Diagram

The utility makes your life way easier when dealing with Virtual Machines running on Microsoft Azure IaaS.

  • Secure file copy with no independent encryption or VPN needed
  • Manual file copy to/from Azure VMs without the need to keep the UI open until the file copy completes
  • Automatic scheduling of file copy jobs for nightly or weekly copies to/from Azure VMs
  • A wizard-driven UI to copy files in just a few clicks – with no scripting needed

If you want to download it, check out the Veeam Website.

To set it up the tool connects to the PowerShell endpoint for your IaaS VM. Just add the Virtual Machine and you are ready to go! With that you can do some great things, like simply copy a file to an Azure IaaS VM or even doing scheduled backups of files from inside Azure VMs like Didier Van Hoye did.

Veeam Vanguard

Veeam Vanguard 2015

Today Veeam announced the Veeam Vanguard Program for the first time, and I am proud to announce that I am one of the first Veeam Vanguards in 2015.

A Veeam Vanguard represents the Veeam brand to the highest level in many of the different technology communities in which Veeam engages. These individuals are chosen for their acumen, engagement and style in their activities on and offline.

I am really proud to be part of this. This is my thirds technology award, after being a Microsoft MVP and Cisco Champion for some years now.

Microsoft Azure Surface Pro Flight

VeeamON Las Vegas, E2EVC Barcelona, MVP Summit Redmond and MMS Minnesota 2014

Last Sunday I finally arrived back home in Switzerland after 3-4 weeks of traveling, presenting, working and enjoying in different cities. I had a great time, met a lot of great people, learned a lot of new stuff and had a lot of great opportunities to present. This is why I think I should write a little summary about the past weeks.

VeeamON 2014

VeeamON 2014 Las Vegas Microsoft

My first job in the journey was the VeeamON 2014 in Las Vegas. Veeam did a great job with their first Data Center Availability Conference where they had keynote speakers like Ratmir Timashev (CEO Veeam) and Alexis Ohanian (Co-founder of reddit) and over 50 breakout sessions. They also released a new backup product for physical endpoints during the event, which allows you to backup physical servers.

E2EVC Barcelona 2014

E2EVC Barcelona

After a little break in my travel list I was the Experts to Experts Virtualization Conference in Barcelona. During this event I had a session where I talked about Disaster Recovery using Azure Site Recovery. The E2EVC is always a great event to learn about different virtualization solutions from different vendors such as Microsoft, VMware and Citrix.

TechEd Barcelona 2014

After the the E2E Virtualization Conference I did a quick visit at TechEd Europe where I met some of my friends from itnetx. And of course I also had some free time and visiting the city.

Microsoft MVP Summit Redmond

Microsoft Azure Surface Pro Flight

After a great time in Barcelona and a couple of days back home in Switzerland I was invited for the Microsoft MVP Summit on the Microsoft Campus in Redmond. Time to learn about new technologies and have some great discussions with the Microsoft Product Groups and other Microsoft MVPs. Seattle is always a great city to visit and I love to spend some extra days in Seattle even I didn’t get a Microsoft Band.

MMS Minnesota

My last business stop was the Midwest Management Summit (MMS) in Minneapolis. During this event I had two sessions, one about Building a Datacenter Abstraction Layer with System Center Virtual Machine Manager and one about Disaster Recovery using Azure Site Recovery including the new solutions Microsoft showed at TechEd Europe.

New York

My Last stop in the journey was New York where I spend some free days with some friends before I finally went back home to Switzerland.

Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE

Veeam Announces Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE

This week I had the chance to be in Las Vegas at the VeeamON 2014 conference and so far it was an absolutely great event, but I will write about that in another blog post. Veeam also did announce the Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE which allows you to backup not only Windows based notebooks, tablets and desktops, it also allows you to backup physical Windows Server machines, which will make a lot of people very happy. Veeam points out that this will be a free release of a standalone product which will not be integrated in to the Veeam Suite. This means there will be no central management console which kind of makes it not useful for large scale deployments. But for highly virtualized environments this can be a great solution to backup a few of your remaining physical servers.

One More Thing

A beta version of Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE will be released in November and Veeam is looking for feedback. If you want to know more about it checkout Mike Resseler’s (Product Strategy Specialist for Veeam and Microsoft MVP) blog post.

If you are working in the Virtualization space you should definitely know the company called Veeam. Veeam offers a great set of products for Datacenter availability such as Backup and Replication software as well as Monitoring solutions for Hyper-V or System Center. Now Veeam has created an event called VeeamON 2014, 3 days of 30+ interactive breakout sessions, live demos and deep dives. Hear from Veeam executives, industry leaders and Veeam customers. If you’re looking for education, networking and fun, VeeamON 2014 is an event you will not want to miss!

VeeamON 2014 will take place at the ultra-modern Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada from October 6 – 8, 2014.

Top Reasons to Attend

I already did some work with Veeam on different projects, online webinars or events such as System Center Universe and so for me the VeeamON 2014 event is a must. It will be great to meet a lot of people and leaders from the Virtualization Industry.

Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V

Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V

Veeam just released the Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V. The Task Manager for Hyper-V is a lightweight tool which doesn’t need to be installed you can just run it from a USB stick for example. The Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V visualizes real-time performance data from your Hyper-V host and each child VM running on that host. You will be able to view what resources the parent partition is using and at the same time see what compute performance your virtual machines are using. This will make your life much easier if you need to see what resources are consumed on the Hyper-V host.

You can get more information about the Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V on Mike Resslers (Microsoft MVP and Product Strategy Specialist for Veeam) blog post: Announcing: Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V

And you can download it directly from the Veeam Website for free: Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V
