Thomas Maurer helps organizations turn complex sovereignty, resilience, and regulatory requirements into practical cloud and AI architectures. He has worked in cloud and datacenter technology for more than a decade, as a partner architect, an engineering evangelist and now a field leader.
Current role
Thomas works as an EMEA Global Black Belt (GBB) for Sovereign Cloud at Microsoft, leading sovereign cloud and resilience engagements across EMEA and focusing on Azure sovereign cloud solutions including hybrid cloud, multicloud, and edge computing. In this senior technical leadership role within Microsoft’s Commercial Solution Area (CSA), he partners with enterprise customers, CxOs, and technical decision-makers across EMEA to accelerate digital transformation with Microsoft’s sovereign and trusted cloud platforms. He helps organizations address complex technical challenges, remove roadblocks, and ensuring that our customers can take full advantage of Microsoft’s trusted cloud platforms and Microsoft’s comprehensive spectrum of digital sovereignty capabilities such as Sovereign Public Cloud, Sovereign Private Cloud, and National Partner Clouds. This includes solutions such as Azure Arc, Azure Local, Foundry Local, M365 Local, and more.
He advises executives, shapes strategy and helps set Microsoft apart in sovereign scenarios. He also builds technical accelerators and reference architectures that others can reuse, and he brings field insights back to Microsoft’s engineering teams to help shape product roadmaps.

- Resilience and continuity: Designing cloud architectures that keep critical services running, even in disconnected or high-risk scenarios

Background
Before his current role, Thomas was Principal Program Manager and Chief Evangelist for Azure Hybrid in Microsoft’s Azure engineering team. He led global community and customer engagement for Azure’s hybrid, multicloud, edge and sovereign cloud platform. He drove adoption through advocacy, events, technical demos and enablement work closely tied to the engineering teams.
Earlier, he was a Lead Architect and executive team member at itnetX in Switzerland. There he worked closely with Microsoft as a partner Cloud Solutions Architect and Azure Advisor, designing and delivering cloud and datacenter solutions for enterprise customers.
Recognition
Thomas was a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) from 2012 to 2019. He has received several community and industry awards, including Cisco Champion, Veeam Vanguard and Windows Insider MVP. He has been named among the Top Azure Influencers and received the Digital Revolution Award for his contributions to the Microsoft community.

Thomas speaks regularly at international conferences and industry events, including Microsoft Ignite, NVIDIA GTC, HPE Discover and Microsoft Sovereignty Days across Europe. His sessions turn sovereign cloud, hybrid architecture and AI infrastructure into practical, real-world guidance.
He has shared hands-on content for many years. His blog and his YouTube channel, which has more than 100,000 subscribers, help IT professionals, architects and decision-makers understand cloud technologies and put them to work.
