Windows Insider MVP

Windows Insider – Insiders2Campus visit in Redmond

If you have been following on social media in the last couple of days, you might have seen that I had the chance to speak at different conferences and events like SCOM Day in Gothenburg and Cloud Camp in Dublin. I also had the possibility to visit the Microsoft Campus in Redmond, and meet with the Windows Insider team. I was one of the lucky winners of the Insiders2Campus contest this summer and as a price I had was able to meet with the Windows team.

I have been a Windows Insider for the first day, and I am always excited to try out new features and give feedback to the engineering teams. Having the chance to meet with the team behind the Windows Insider program, was a great opportunity. I was able to visit the Microsoft Campus a couple of times already, for example for the Microsoft MVP Summits. But the Windows Insider team organized some special visits on places I never really had access to before.

Microsoft Garage

We had the chance to visit the Microsoft Garage. The Garage is a resource to Microsoft employees that supports and encourages problem solving in new and innovative ways, ultimately empowering people to achieve more. It is also a great place for hackathons within Microsoft. This is the place where cool Microsoft products like Microsoft Launcher for Android and the Outlook plugin, FindTime were created.

Microsoft Treehouse

Another place which you need to visit if you are on the Microsoft Campus, is the Microsoft Treehouse office. The Treehouse is basically an outdoor meeting space in the trees.

Tom Microsoft HoloLens

As part of the Windows Insiders2Campus visit, we also had the chance to try out Microsoft HoloLens and other Microsoft products.

There was obviously a lot more to see, like the Microsoft Envisioning Center, the Surface Lab and much more. But the greatest thing really was to meet the team behind the products. Really big thanks to the Windows Insider team, which made this possible. I think this was an unforgettable experience and if you ever have the chance to visit the Microsoft Campus in Redmond, it is definitely worth a visit.

Speaking at E2EVC 2017 Prague

I’m happy to speak at the Experts 2 Experts Virtualization Conference in Prague this year. This will be my 10th E2EVC, I was speaking in many events since 2012 in cities like Rome, Hamburg, Dublin, Copenhagen, Brussels and many more. So I am really happy to speak at this event again. This time I will talk, together with Isidora Katanic, about HoloLens and show some technical background to the device and what Microsoft is doing in VR and AR with Windows Mixed Reality.

HoloLens

My Microsoft HoloLens arrived – First Impressions

A while back Microsoft announced the Microsoft HoloLens and Windows 10 Holographic, which allows you to work with holograms. Last week my HoloLens finally arrived at my door step. And I had the chance to play with it a little bit over the weekend. I already had the chance to try it the first time a couple of weeks ago when I was speaking at the ITPro.ru event in Cluj. But since then Microsoft released a bigger update to HoloLens with some new feature like Bluethooth keyboard pairing, better voice commands, app improvements and much more.

Unboxing and Setup of the Microsoft HoloLens

HoloLens Package

The Microsoft HoloLens comes in a nice designed and large box with good quality. Basically what you can expect from a premium device which is not that cheap. You also get the HoloLens Clicker which you can pair with your HoloLens to click on things instead of using the click gesture.

HoloLens Box

I was quite surprised that the getting started guide only shows how you wear it and how you turn it on and off, but to be honest, that is all you need since the first setup and calibration experience is very easy, self-explaining and very nice designed.

Using Microsoft HoloLens

HoloLens Startmenu

To be honest, since this was the developer edition of HoloLens and it was still one of the first devices and software versions released to the public, I expected thing to be much more difficult and unstable. But already this release for me seems to be pretty good and usable. Even my mum and my dad, which are not really computer nerds, had no problems using it after only a couple of minutes.

To use it you simply look at things, use hand gestures, voice commands or paired Bluetooth devices for input. Especially the voice command and the gestures were working without any problems, things are recognized instantly and with no lag or misbehavior.

HoloLens Package

With the bloom gesture you can get a holographic start menu where you can find all the apps and Cortana, you can simply start an app by tapping on it. After that the app starts as a new hologram and you can first place it somewhere in the room. You can also size it and make sure it is at the right place, for example if you want to pin your Microsoft Edge Browser or pictures to the wall.

HoloLens Hyper-V

You get some default apps but you can also get some apps from the Windows Store. For me I downloaded the Mail and Calendar app and the Remote Desktop App. This allows me to manage my Hyper-V Servers directly from a hologram.

Vision and View

HoloLens Holograms

The view is surprisingly good, even the pictures I made to not really show this quality, but when you wear it the resolution and sharpness etc. are not really a problem.

One of the things you will notices is that the windows you can really see holograms is smaller than your normal viewing angle. So for example if a hologram is on the right edge of your view you can’t see it. But to be honest you get used to this very quickly.

Overall HoloLens Experience

Thomas Maurer HoloLens

So this was a quick summary of my first impressions of the Microsoft HoloLens. I have to be honest, I didn’t expect it to work that good. Microsoft HoloLens really works like Microsoft is advertising it. It is not just a crazy prototype device anymore, it is real. And I really can’t wait to see what developers do with the possibly Microsoft HoloLens offers to them.

Windows 10 Task View

The best Windows 10 Features – Why you will love Windows 10

Since the first release of the Windows 10 Preview in the Insider program, I was using the Technical previews on my Surface Pro 3, and it is excellent how Microsoft is improving Windows 10 over the last several months based on research and feedback from the Windows Insider program.

In some days, on July 29, Microsoft will release Windows 10 to the public, and here are some reasons why you will love Windows 10:

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge Browser

With Windows 10 Microsoft released a new browser called Microsoft Edge (before Project Spartan) which is amazingly fast and brings a lot of new features to the table such as Cortana Integration, Web notes which allow you basically draw your notes on websites and share them and Microsoft also promised to enable browser extensions. Secret: you can also switch from a Light Theme to a Dark Theme.

You can also check out the new edge insider preview here: Microsoft Edge Insider

Task View & Virtual Desktop

Windows 10 Task View

Most of the IT Pros reading this blog already knew about Task view in the previous version of Windows using WIN + TAB, but only a few other users did know about these features. Microsoft not only improved the Task view, but Microsoft also promoted it much better with an icon in the Taskbar.

In Windows 10 WIN + TAB does not only offer you Task View it also allows you to create and switch between Virtual Desktops. With Virtual Desktops, you can now finally create multiple workspaces on your PC, which should bring you the productivity boost you need. Secret: You can switch between different Desktops using the Shortcut: CTRL + WIN + ARROW (LEFT and RIGHT).

Hyper-V

Hyper-V vNext Runtime Memory Resize

Microsoft builds Hyper-V directly into the Windows Client since Windows 8. This is great if you want to run Virtual Machines on your Windows Client. Windows 10 Client Hyper-V brings you the excellent performance and features Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V will bring you. Of course, some features are only available in the server build of Hyper-V, but you get some great features such as Enhanced Session mode to copy & paste between your PC and your Virtual Machine. Secret: Windows 10 will allow you to run Hyper-V and use Connected Standby at the same time.
