Azure Local and Azure Arc are central to this approach. Together, they provide a consistent Azure foundation across datacenters, edge locations, multicloud environments, and sovereign deployments. Azure Local supports environments ranging from small-form-factor edge systems to large-scale datacenters, with both hyperconverged and disaggregated infrastructure options.

More than a virtualization alternative

My key takeaway from these two reports is simple: infrastructure decisions should not be limited to selecting the next hypervisor.

Azure Local gives organizations a platform for the virtual machines they run today while creating a foundation for cloud-native applications, distributed operations, local AI, and sovereign private cloud scenarios. That combination of proven virtualization, Azure innovation, flexible deployment models, and unified management is where Microsoft’s strategy becomes especially compelling.
