Recommend Hotfixes and Updates for Hyper-V and Failover Clusters

I the last couple of releases I always posted the pages where you could get the list of Recommended Hotfixes and Updates for Windows Server 2012 Failover Clusters and List of Hyper-V and Failover Cluster Hotfixes for Windows Server 2012. I want to upgrade the post with the links for Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2. So you can find all updates from a single site.

Feel free to share this page and I always recommend to get the latest hotfixes when you are deploying a new Hyper-V or Scale-Out File Server environment. And definitely check also Aidan Finns blog from time to time where he does some deeper look at the Knowledge Base articles for Hyper-V.

Recommended Hotfixes and Updates for Windows Server 2012 Failover Clusters

Back in March I posted links to two TechNet Wiki Pages where all the available Failover Cluster and Hyper-V hotfixes were listed (List of Hyper-V and Failover Cluster Hotfixes for Windows Server 2012). Now the Microsoft Cluster team created an offical knowledge base article (KB2784261) for recommended hotfixes and updates for Windows Server 2012-based Failover Clusters. Make sure you check this list of hotfixes before you go in production with your Windows Server 2012 cluster.

There are some really important fixes especially if you are running a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster and you are using Cluster Shared Volumes.

You can find more information on KB2784261 – Recommended hotfixes and updates for Windows Server 2012-based Failover Clusters.

First Patch Tuesday with Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Patches – New version of Hyper-V Integration Services

Hyper-V Integration Services Upgrade

Yesterday Microsoft released some patches for Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8. In this wave Microsoft also included some fixes for Hyper-V and also updated the Integration Services to a new version.

Old Hyper-V Integration Services Version: 6.2.9200.16384
New Hyper-V Integration Services Version: 6.2.9200.16433

To check which version is installed in your virtual machine you can use Windows PowerShell: Get Integration Services Version of Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Virtual Machines.

So if you are running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 virtual machines or later don’t forget to update your Hyper-V Integration Services on those virtual machines. If you are running Windows Server 2012 virtual machines you can normally patch those via Windows Update or WSUS to get the latest Hyper-V integration services.

Cisco UCS Hyper-V Cluster – Important Updates for the Hyper-V Cluster – Part 9

Since we have installed our Microsoft Hyper-V Cluster on the Cisco UCS, Microsoft released some patches for Hyper-V, Windows and Clustering.

There are two really important Updates which I would recommend for Hyper-V Clusters.

  • The first is Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V Server 2008 R2. Service Pack 1 brings a lot of Hotfixes for Hyper-V, Failover Cluster Feature and other Microsoft Server features. And it brings also a two new features called Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX.
  • The second one is a hotfix for Servers with Intel Westmere or Sandy Bridge and has a large amount of physical memory. Most of the Cisco UCS Blades will meet this configuration. You can get more information on this Hyper-V hotfix here.

This two updates will bring you a much better experience with your Hyper-V Cluster. It will improve performance, stability and it will add new features.
