Microsoft Azure Surface Pro Flight

VeeamON Las Vegas, E2EVC Barcelona, MVP Summit Redmond and MMS Minnesota 2014

Last Sunday I finally arrived back home in Switzerland after 3-4 weeks of traveling, presenting, working and enjoying in different cities. I had a great time, met a lot of great people, learned a lot of new stuff and had a lot of great opportunities to present. This is why I think I should write a little summary about the past weeks.

VeeamON 2014

VeeamON 2014 Las Vegas Microsoft

My first job in the journey was the VeeamON 2014 in Las Vegas. Veeam did a great job with their first Data Center Availability Conference where they had keynote speakers like Ratmir Timashev (CEO Veeam) and Alexis Ohanian (Co-founder of reddit) and over 50 breakout sessions. They also released a new backup product for physical endpoints during the event, which allows you to backup physical servers.

E2EVC Barcelona 2014

E2EVC Barcelona

After a little break in my travel list I was the Experts to Experts Virtualization Conference in Barcelona. During this event I had a session where I talked about Disaster Recovery using Azure Site Recovery. The E2EVC is always a great event to learn about different virtualization solutions from different vendors such as Microsoft, VMware and Citrix.

TechEd Barcelona 2014

TechEd Barcelona Selfie

After the the E2E Virtualization Conference I did a quick visit at TechEd Europe where I met some of my friends from itnetx. And of course I also had some free time and visiting the city.

Microsoft MVP Summit Redmond

Microsoft Azure Surface Pro Flight

After a great time in Barcelona and a couple of days back home in Switzerland I was invited for the Microsoft MVP Summit on the Microsoft Campus in Redmond. Time to learn about new technologies and have some great discussions with the Microsoft Product Groups and other Microsoft MVPs. Seattle is always a great city to visit and I love to spend some extra days in Seattle even I didn’t get a Microsoft Band.

MMS Minnesota

MMS Minnesota Selfie

My last business stop was the Midwest Management Summit (MMS) in Minneapolis. During this event I had two sessions, one about Building a Datacenter Abstraction Layer with System Center Virtual Machine Manager and one about Disaster Recovery using Azure Site Recovery including the new solutions Microsoft showed at TechEd Europe.

New York

SCU Europe 2014 is the successor of System Center Universe DACH 2013 in Bern, Switzerland. SCU DACH 2013 was a very successful community event, and got a lot of great feedback.

Never seen such a great event before. Thanks again for the great work and organization!

SCU DACH Is a potential succesor of MMS for people in Europe

Lineup was great.

Incredible high skilled speakers there. Loved it!Thanks to the organizators to bring up so many good speakers.Nice location, good beer and food and awesome people.

Absolut excellent! The entire team did a great job! Thank you for that.

Great job organizing this event. I would love to come back next year.

Extreme good organized, highly skilled speakers, very cool people and the content was amazing. Loved it and will be back next year for sure.

The Content

System Center Universe

This time System Center Universe Europe 2014 will be even bigger, with more speakers, more sessions and more experts. This time in for tracks there are around 60 breakout sessions around topics for the Microsoft Datacenter, Private Cloud, Public Cloud and Hybrid Cloud, focusing on technologies like:

  • Microsoft Hyper-V

  • and a lot more…

For event attendees, only the best is good enough! SCU Europe will host the crème-de-la-crème of the Windows Server and System Center Community from all over the world, including a variety of Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals (MVPs) and Microsoft employees. Take the opportunity to learn from the best and most experienced experts and community leaders in the Microsoft System Center Cloud and Datacenter Management area. In addition to classic breakout sessions, attendees also have the opportunity to discuss specific topics with several experts in small groups. So make sure you bring your questions and problems with you to discuss them with the experts. A real added value!

More Value

SCU Experts

So you will have a lot of great content and real word examples in the breakout sessions. But this is not the only benefit. In this three days you will have a lot of opportunities to talk to experts and other attendees to share some real world experience.

As in SCU DACH 2013, SCU Europe 2014 will included lunch and some networking parties so there is enough time to share experiences and knowledge.

The Location

Messe Basel

The location is different this time. Last time SCU DACH 2013 was hosted in Bern Switzerland. This time, since the location had to grow, the event will be held in Congress Center in Basel Switzerland. Basel is a great city with a lot of things to see around the event it self. With it’s two train stations and it’s airport, Basel is a perfect location for an international conference like this. You can reach the event location from anywhere in about 15 minutes.

SCU Location Map Basel

Azure Preview Virtual Machines

Virtual Machines IaaS now available in the Azure preview portal

Some months ago Microsoft lunched a new preview portal for Microsoft Azure, with a cool new design and features. The IaaS or Virtual Machine services was missing from the portal. A week ago Microsoft announced to add some enhancements to the preview portal including Virtual Machines. Now today Microsoft rolled out the enhancements to the portal. with other improvements:

  • IaaS Functionality: Create, deploy, monitor and manage rich virtual machines’ based applications, and manage virtual networks within a fully customizable Portal experience. In addition to creating simple virtual machines, we are adding the ability to automate the deployment of rich multi-machine application templates with a few clicks. With this, deploying a multi-tier, highly-available SharePoint farm from the portal will be a few clicks away!
  • Resource Group enhancements: Manage infrastructure services like virtual machines and virtual networks along with platform services like web sites and databases, all within the same Resource Group, as a single application. This level of flexibility and control is an example of how Azure is leading the way in blurring the lines between infrastructure and platform services, giving customers the choice to pick the best platform for their application needs.
  • Azure Image Gallery Updates: The completely re-imagined Azure Gallery is more powerful with the addition of several new virtual machine images that enable you to provision dev/test servers or production applications in minutes. The new virtual machine images and templates take the guesswork out of building, orchestrating and deploying complex applications, thus letting you focus on creating business value instead of managing the infrastructure.
  • Azure SQL Database: Customers can manage their Azure SQL Databases within the Portal, consistent with other Azure services. This includes provisioning databases across Web and Business (currently in general availability) and Basic, Standard, and Premium (currently in preview).

StorSimple

Microsoft Announces Azure StorSimple Hybrid Storage Solutions For The Enterprise

Today Microsoft announced that starting August 1, the will deliver the new StorSimple 8000 series hybrid storage arrays. The StorSimple 8000 series are the most powerful StorSimple systems ever and have even tighter integration with Azure, including two new Azure-based capabilities to enable new use cases and centralize data management. These new solutions demonstrate how Microsoft is bringing the best of on-premises storage together with the cloud in order to deliver bottom line savings to customers by cutting storage costs from 40 to 60% and helping IT teams focus more on business strategies than infrastructure management.

The new StorSimple 8000 series arrays come in two flavors to meet a variety of capacity and performance needs:  the StorSimple 8100 and the StorSimple 8600, which you can read about here.

The new StorSimple 8000 series arrays come in two flavors to meet a variety of capacity and performance needs:  the StorSimple 8100 and the StorSimple 8600, which you can read about here.  These are enterprise hybrid storage arrays with a twist – instead of being limited to only SSDs and HDDs, these arrays use Azure Storage as a hybrid cloud tier for automatic capacity expansion and off-site data protection. That means IT teams don’t have to spend so much time and effort working on the next inevitable storage capacity upgrade or managing the complex details of data protection. Data stored on StorSimple 8000 series arrays is automatically protected off-site by cloud snapshots, which fill the enormous gap between problematic tape solutions and costly remote replication solutions.

To go with the new arrays, there is the Microsoft Azure StorSimple Virtual Appliance, which is an implementation of StorSimple technology running as an Azure virtual machine in the cloud. With a matching Azure StorSimple virtual machine, StorSimple 8000 series customers can run applications in Azure that access snapshot virtual volumes in the cloud. Customers will be able to run new applications that search and analyze historical datasets without disrupting production work in their datacenter. This new StorSimple Virtual Appliance not only works for data from Windows Server and Hyper-V, but on-premises Linux and VMware servers, as well, providing hybrid cloud capabilities for the most common server platforms today.

The Virtual Appliance also enables disaster recovery (DR) in the cloud. Virtualized applications that store their data on an Azure StorSimple array in a customer’s datacenter can be restarted in VMs in Azure with access to previously uploaded data. Updates to data made during recovery operations can be downloaded later to StorSimple arrays on-premises when normal operations resume.

DR is an area of concern for many customers and they seldom get a chance to test their abilities. Microsoft Azure StorSimple 8000 Series arrays and Virtual Appliances have a feature called Instant Recovery, which presents synthetic, full images of virtual volumes in Azure to applications and end users so they can start accessing data as soon as possible after a disaster. Instant recovery accelerates restores and DR testing by only downloading data that is needed and bypassing data that isn’t needed.

Another groundbreaking capability in this release is the Microsoft Azure StorSimple Manager, which consolidates management for all of a customer’s Azure StorSimple 8000 series arrays and Virtual Appliances. Administrators use the Manager to centrally control all aspects of StorSimple storage and data management from the cloud, so they can ensure consistent operations and data protection/retention policies across the enterprise. The new StorSimple Manager also gives administrators a dashboard with up-to-the-minute status and reports so they can quickly spot storage troubles and trends and allows the IT team to spend less time on storage infrastructure management and shift resources to business applications.

StorSimple customers have been seeing the financial and IT efficiency benefits of hybrid cloud storage for years.  Now, the Microsoft Azure StorSimple solution brings new innovations to enable even greater operational efficiency, and is a great example of technology developed with a hybrid cloud design point and critical customer needs in mind.

InovatiX

Back from inovatiX Amsterdam 2014

A little over 24 hours the itnetx team arrived at the Zurich airport. At the end of last week some of you may have seen a lot of tweets around Microsoft System Center with the hashtag #inovatiX. Well the name inovatiX comes from the company names of inovativ and itnetx. Both companies do focus on Microsoft Cloud solutions based on System Center, Windows Server, Hyper-V and Microsoft Azure. So what is behind that inovatiX event. InovatiX was the first run of the know-how sharing event between inovativ.nl, inovativ.be and itnetx.ch. In different focus groups around topics like Windows Azure Pack, Hyper-V, Config Manager, Windows InTune, Operations Manager, VMM or Microsoft Azure,  the cloud experts of those companies shared knowledge and experience with real world deployments.

InovatiX

For me personally I had some great talks about Windows Azure Pack, Hyper-V, VMM, Storage Spaces, Scale-Out File Servers, Network Virtualization and a lot more. And it was fun to finally meet the guys from inovativ in person.

InovatiX

This event was a perfect example how different companies can collaborate with each other to evolve and to make the quality even better, and help employees to Thanks here to the management of Inovativ and itnetx for organizing this.
