Microsoft Windows 10 January Event

What’s next for Windows 10

Microsoft yesterday held the January event about the next generation of Windows and showed some great new features of Windows 10. If you have watched the Windows 10 webcast, you have seen that Microsoft announced and showed a lot of new stuff yesterday. In this post I do a quick summary about this Windows 10 event. Spoiler alert, since this was a consumer event, there were no news about Windows Server or System Center.

Windows as a Service

Well the first great news yesterday was that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade in the first year for Windows 8.1, Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 7 users. After that Microsoft tries to keep the install base very up-to-date to make it easier for developers to develop and deploy new apps to customers.

New Windows 10 Experience

Windows 10 Expierence

Joe Belfiore demoed some great new features and the experience you get with new Windows 10. One of the great things you will see that there will be just one version of Windows 10, everything should be one platform. He also demoed the new Action Center and the new Start menu.

Continuum Mode

Windows10 Continuum

Continuum Mode was announced back in September. Continuum helps two-in-one devices to switch between different modes such as desktop mode with mouse and keyboard and tablet mode using touch input. So you always get the best experience when using the device.

Cortana

Windows 10 Phone Laptop Cortana

Another big news was the release of Cortana for Windows. Cortana is the personal digital assistant you already know from Windows Phone. Microsoft also showed some great improvements and how Cortana can make your life easier.

Windows 10 for phones

Windows 10 Phone

Microsoft also announced that Windows 10 will be coming to phones and small tablets.

New Browser

Windows 10 Spartan

Microsoft officially showed a new browser called Project Spartan, which will bring the latest web standard to the Microsoft web platform and some other cool features like digital inking and Cortana integration.

New universal applications

Windows 10 Universal Apps

Microsoft bring several universal apps to the Windows 10 platform like a great new Photo, Video or Music apps. This apps are running across several devices such as phones, tablets, desktops, TVs and the Xbox One.

Office universal apps

Windows 10 Universal Office

Not only Windows integrated apps are coming as universal apps, Microsoft is also releasing a touch-friendly version of Office as universal app which will run Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint across different devices types.

Xbox app

Windows 10 Xbox App

Microsoft also demoed a new Xbox app on Windows 10. The Xbox App will allow you to get your Xbox experience to Windows 10. This will bring multiplayer across devices (PC and Xbox One), Game DVR, Game streaming (from Xbox One to PC) and DirectX 12.

Microsoft HoloLens

Microsoft HoloLens

One of the biggest things Microsoft announced yesterday was the Microsoft HoloLens which is the world’s first holographic computing platform. With Windows 10, holograms are Windows universal apps and Windows universal apps can work as holograms, making it possible to place three-dimensional holograms in the world around you to communicate, create and explore in a manner that is far more personal and human.

Surface Hub

Surface Hub

Microsoft yesterday not only announced a new device called HoloLens, they also announced a new device called Surface Hub, which is basically a 84-inch touch screen with multi-touch and multi pen input, including Skype for Business and some great whiteboard technology.

Feedback is really important

Windows Insider

Microsoft did talk a lot about the Windows Insider Program and the feedback they are getting from a lot of people around the world.

Some facts

  • The next Windows 10 Preview will be available next week
  • Project Spartan will not be included in the next preview release

Microsoft Azure Surface Pro Flight

VeeamON Las Vegas, E2EVC Barcelona, MVP Summit Redmond and MMS Minnesota 2014

Last Sunday I finally arrived back home in Switzerland after 3-4 weeks of traveling, presenting, working and enjoying in different cities. I had a great time, met a lot of great people, learned a lot of new stuff and had a lot of great opportunities to present. This is why I think I should write a little summary about the past weeks.

VeeamON 2014

VeeamON 2014 Las Vegas Microsoft

My first job in the journey was the VeeamON 2014 in Las Vegas. Veeam did a great job with their first Data Center Availability Conference where they had keynote speakers like Ratmir Timashev (CEO Veeam) and Alexis Ohanian (Co-founder of reddit) and over 50 breakout sessions. They also released a new backup product for physical endpoints during the event, which allows you to backup physical servers.

E2EVC Barcelona 2014

E2EVC Barcelona

After a little break in my travel list I was the Experts to Experts Virtualization Conference in Barcelona. During this event I had a session where I talked about Disaster Recovery using Azure Site Recovery. The E2EVC is always a great event to learn about different virtualization solutions from different vendors such as Microsoft, VMware and Citrix.

TechEd Barcelona 2014

TechEd Barcelona Selfie

After the the E2E Virtualization Conference I did a quick visit at TechEd Europe where I met some of my friends from itnetx. And of course I also had some free time and visiting the city.

Microsoft MVP Summit Redmond

Microsoft Azure Surface Pro Flight

After a great time in Barcelona and a couple of days back home in Switzerland I was invited for the Microsoft MVP Summit on the Microsoft Campus in Redmond. Time to learn about new technologies and have some great discussions with the Microsoft Product Groups and other Microsoft MVPs. Seattle is always a great city to visit and I love to spend some extra days in Seattle even I didn’t get a Microsoft Band.

MMS Minnesota

MMS Minnesota Selfie

My last business stop was the Midwest Management Summit (MMS) in Minneapolis. During this event I had two sessions, one about Building a Datacenter Abstraction Layer with System Center Virtual Machine Manager and one about Disaster Recovery using Azure Site Recovery including the new solutions Microsoft showed at TechEd Europe.

New York

New York

My Last stop in the journey was New York where I spend some free days with some friends before I finally went back home to Switzerland.

MMS Midwest Management Summit

Speaking at MMS

After System Center Universe Europe 2014 and E2EVC Brussels, I am proud to announce that I am also speaking at the new Midwest Management Summit (MMS). The Midwest Management Summit is a 3-day conference purposely capped to just 500 attendees so that nobody gets lost in the crowd. Speakers have time to meet and talk to you. No rushing people out of a session to get the next speaker going. Time to absorb what you see and talk it over with speakers and other attendees.

I will speak in two sessions:

Building a Datacenter Abstraction Layer with Virtual Machine Manager

The session delivers an overview about how you can build a Datacenter Abstraction Layer between your Fabric such as Storage, Network and Compute resources and your services. The session is focused on Fabric Management with System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager. Attendees will learn how to build an Datacenter Abstraction Layer between Fabric and Services with Virtual Machine Manager.

Disaster Recovery with Azure Site Recovery

The session shows you, how you can use Microsoft Disaster Recovery Technologies such as Hyper-V Replica, System Center Virtual Machine Manager and Azure Site Recovery to failover your Microsoft Cloud. It also shows the scenario how you can replicate virtual machines to Microsoft Azure. This includes knowledge about the different Disaster Recovery Solutions from Microsoft

The Midwest Management Summit will take place from November 10-12 in the Radisson Blu, Mall of America Minnesota, USA.

If you are interested to join the so called new MMS, checkout the  Midwest Management Summit website.

MMS

Join the Midwest Management Summit and learn everything about the Microsoft CloudOS, System Center, Hyper-V, Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Azure.

System Center Universe Europe 2014

System Center Universe Europe 2014 – Recap

Finally I found some time to write a quick recap about the System Center Universe Europe 2014 conference in Basel. Since I live 20 minutes from the city center it was easy for me to get there. I already enjoyed some evenings with some of the speakers and attendees which arrived some days before the SCU conference in Basel. It is always a great chance to talk to other experts and share some experience.

On Wednesday the SCU Europe 2014 finally kicked off and we had 3 days fully packed with System Center and Microsoft CloudOS sessions, industry experts from around the world, networking and other parties. Three days which need a lot of your time and energy but which are totally worth it.

System Center Universe Europe 2014

I had the chance to deliver two sessions, the first session I was talking together with Walter Dey (Former Cisco Distinguished Engineer) about different Software-Defined Networking (SDN) solutions from Cisco, VMware and of course Microsoft. In the second session I was talking with Michel Lüscher (Microsoft COE Architect) about Disaster Recovery with Hyper-V Replica and Azure Site Recovery.

System Center Universe Europe 2014

The session recordings not just for my sessions but also for all the sessions at System Center Universe Europe 2014 will be available in the next weeks.

Other highlights were the official Speaker and Sponsor party on Wednesday, the networking party/event on Thursday and the closing party on Friday. The feedback I got so far is that this was an absolutely great event with awesome sessions, perfect organization and a lot of fun. I really can’t wait to be back next year for System Center Universe Europe 2015.

VeeamON

VeeamON 2014 – Data Center Availability Event

If you are working in the Virtualization space you should definitely know the company called Veeam. Veeam offers a great set of products for Datacenter availability such as Backup and Replication software as well as Monitoring solutions for Hyper-V or System Center. Now Veeam has created an event called VeeamON 2014, 3 days of 30+ interactive breakout sessions, live demos and deep dives. Hear from Veeam executives, industry leaders and Veeam customers. If you’re looking for education, networking and fun, VeeamON 2014 is an event you will not want to miss!

VeeamON 2014 will take place at the ultra-modern Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada from October 6 – 8, 2014.

Top Reasons to Attend

  • Discover a new level of Availability for your Modern Data Center
  • Save money on VMCE training and make your boss happy!
  • Connect with industry leaders
